SUMMARY:The Drift: Stopping America's Slide to Socialism with Kevin A. Hassett
DESCRIPTION:Join the Show-Me Institute\, National Review Institute\, 97.1 FM Talk\, and Show-Me Opportunity on Tuesday\, October 24 for an evening with Kevin A. Hassett as he discusses his compelling memoir and analysis\, The Drift: Stopping America’s Slide to Socialism. \nReception: 5:30 P.M.\nProgram : 6:00 P.M. – 7:00 P.M.\nAt the World Chess Hall of Fame\n4652 Maryland Avenue\nSt. Louis\, MO 63108\nRSVP Here for this Free Event \n  \n97.1 FM Talk’s Mark Reardon\, host of The Mark Reardon Show\, will emcee this special event! \n  \n\n\n\n\n\n  \n\n  \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nKevin A. Hassett is the senior adviser to National Review Capital Matters and a distinguished visiting fellow at the Hoover Institution. Hassett served as the 29th Chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers beginning in 2017 and rejoined the White House in 2020 as Senior Advisor to the President. Prior to his White House service\, Hassett was the research director at the American Enterprise Institute for many years. He also served as a senior economist at the Board of Governors of the Federal Reserve System and as an associate professor of economics and finance at Columbia University’s Graduate School of Business\, as well as a visiting professor at New York University’s Law School. He has been an adviser for many presidential campaigns and has contributed regular columns to National Review for almost 20 years.” \n  \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Book\n\nKevin Hassett wasn’t always a Trump supporter. Before his surprising appointment as the top White House economist\, he took a dim view of the populist agenda and mercurial temperament of the man who had won control of the Republican Party. But experience would soon change his mind. \nAs chairman of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers\, Hassett helped Donald Trump bring about a golden age of prosperity\, in which Americans who had been left behind by decades of failed policy were given the opportunity to succeed. The miracle lasted three years\, until a virus from China killed it. \nTrump proved that a mix of free-market principles and enlightened nationalism could revive the American economic dynamo. Guided by an unlikely team of brilliant advisers and driven by his own force of will\, he recognized that Washington bureaucrats had undermined the American dream by inserting themselves into every aspect of the economy. These “experts” were leading us down the path to socialism\, and Trump fought like mad to turn things around. \nEnjoying not only direct access to the president but also his trust and respect\, Hassett was involved in almost every important policy debate. After two exhausting but successful years\, he stepped down from the CEA and returned to private life—only to return as a special adviser on pandemic policy in 2020. \nThe Drift offers a unique perspective on a pivotal presidency. Unconnected and unbeholden to Donald Trump\, Kevin Hassett came to the administration with a critical eye. But working with Trump the president convinced him that this flawed leader might be the only man who could halt the drift toward a statist and moribund economy. Filled with urgent lessons\, this book is essential reading as the drift resumes. \n“Now that the bloom is off the rose of Joe Biden’s presidency\, it’s a good time to look back on his predecessor’s four turbulent years in office. Kevin Hassett has written a characteristically affable and fair memoir of his time running Donald Trump’s Council of Economic Advisers and otherwise assisting the 45th President with his economic policy. A free trader on Tariff Man’s team\, Hassett nevertheless shared Trump’s ambition to revitalize the American economy through deregulation and tax cuts. It is easy to forget just how well that was going when Covid-19 struck. If Hassett is right about America’s secular leftward “Drift\,” then the irony may be that Trump inadvertently ended up accelerating rather than reversing it. Should he ever return to power\, readers of this smart\, disarming book will fervently hope to see its author as Treasury secretary.” —Niall Ferguson\, Milbank Family Senior Fellow\, the Hoover Institution \n\n  \n\n

SUMMARY:Maverick: The Life of Thomas Sowell
DESCRIPTION:Join us on Wednesday\, April 19\, at the Saint Louis University Richard A. Chaifetz School of Business for a special event with Jason L. Riley\, senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and columnist for the Wall Street Journal. Riley will discuss his book Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell .  \nMr. Riley will be signing books prior to the program from 5:00 p.m. – 5:45 p.m. Copies of Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell will be available for purchase. There will also be a reception starting at 5:30 p.m.\nProgram at 6:00 p.m. in the Anheuser-Busch Auditorium\nReserve Your Spot for This Free Event\nValet parking will be available at the circle drive off of Lindell Blvd.\nAbout the Book\nA biography of Thomas Sowell\, one of America’s most influential conservative thinkers. Thomas Sowell is one of the great social theorists of our age. In a career spanning more than a half century\, he has written over thirty books\, covering topics from economic history and social inequality to political theory\, race\, and culture. His bold and unsentimental assaults on liberal orthodoxy have endeared him to many readers but have also enraged fellow intellectuals\, the civil-rights establishment\, and much of the mainstream media. The result has been a lack of acknowledgment of his scholarship among critics who prioritize political correctness. In the first-ever biography of Sowell\, Jason L. Riley gives this iconic thinker his due and responds to the detractors. Maverick showcases Sowell’s most significant writings and traces the life events that shaped his ideas and resulted in a Black orphan from the Jim Crow South becoming one of our foremost public intellectuals.\n\nAbout the Speaker\nJason Riley is an opinion columnist at The Wall Street Journal\, where his column\, Upward Mobility\, has run since 2016. He is also a senior fellow at the Manhattan Institute and provides television commentary for various news outlets. \nMr. Riley\, a 2018 Bradley Prize recipient\, is the author of four books: “Let Them In: The Case for Open Borders” (2008); “Please Stop Helping Us: How Liberals Make It Harder for Blacks to Succeed” (2014); “False Black Power?” (2017); and “Maverick: A Biography of Thomas Sowell” (2021). \nMr. Riley joined the paper in 1994 as a copy reader on the national news desk in New York. He moved to the editorial page in 1995\, was named a senior editorial page writer in 2000\, and became a member of the Editorial Board in 2005. He joined the Manhattan Institute in 2015. \nBorn in Buffalo\, New York\, Mr. Riley earned a bachelor’s degree in English from the State University of New York at Buffalo. \n  \n  \nEvent sponsored by: Show-Me Institute\, the Sinquefield Center for Applied Economic Research\, the Sinquefield Charitable Foundation\, and Show-Me Opportunity

SUMMARY:NEXT GEN: The Red Vs. Blue Myth and the Real Threat to American Stability
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a special NEXT GEN presentation by Tony Woodlief\, Executive Vice President at the State Policy Network\, on how America can move toward depolarization\, and reclaim our right to self-govern. \nWhile pundits on the Left and Right perpetuate the notion that America is a deeply divided nation on the verge of civil war\, ample data prove exactly the opposite. Most Americans are non-ideological and harbor a strong dislike of our two major political parties. What’s more\, large majorities of Americans are patriotic\, tolerant of others’ religious and political beliefs\, enthusiastic about free enterprise\, distrustful of big government\, and firmly in favor of individual freedoms. \nDespite what pundits and politicians assert\, the real threat to America is not everyday Americans; it is a political class that has systematically taken authority that rightly belongs to individuals\, communities\, and states\, and concentrated it in Washington\, D.C.. This political class benefits from polarization and perpetuates the myth of looming civil war to justify its undemocratic impulses. Fortunately\, there are actions any American citizen can take to resist. And by working in concert\, we can even begin to restore the American self-governance bequeathed by our Founders. \nPurchase Tickets Here\n \nHost Committee\nStephanie Bell \nWill Bubelis \nJake Burrola \nRich Chrismer \nSusan Herold \nTimothy Luby \nJames Moog \nBrian Moore \nIsaac Musselwhite \nWilliam Scharf \nKatie Sinquefield \nCarter Smith \nEthan Todd \nJames Townsend \nRebecca Willard \n  \nAbout the Speaker\nTony Woodlief is Executive Vice President at the State Policy Network. In writing I\, Citizen\, Tony conducted extensive research on American public opinion to find out what Americans believe and uncover the source of their political animosities. Through his research\, Tony discovered that America is more united than divided\, despite what the pundits tell us\, and traced the source of our perceived animosity to a small minority of dedicated partisans within the political establishment of Washington\, DC. I\, Citizen tells the story of how these partisans have created the myth of a divided America and how they’ve concentrated power in the hands of unelected bureaucrats and partisan elites\, and offers practical solutions for how we can reclaim our right to self-governance by focusing on solutions and commonalities closer to home. \nPresented by Show-Me Institute

SUMMARY:Taxes Have Consequences: Arthur B. Laffer\, Jeanne Sinquefield and Brian Domitrovic
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a discussion with Arthur B. Laffer\, Jeanne Sinquefield and Brian Domitrovic about their upcoming book Taxes Have Consequences: An Income Tax History of the United States. \nReception begins at 4:30 p.m.\nProgram begins at 5:30 p.m.\n\nRSVP to events@showmeinstitute.org\nPlease include the first and last name of each guest planning to attend.  \n\nAbout The Book\nAuthors: Arthur B. Laffer\, Brian Domitrovic and Jeanne Cairns Sinquefield \nThe definitive history of the effect of the income tax on the economy. \nEver since 1913\, when the United States first imposed the income tax via constitutional amendment\, the top rate of that tax has determined the fate of the American economy. When the top rate has been high\, as in the late 1910s\, the 1930s\, 1940s\, 1950s\, and 1970s\, the response of those with money and capital has been to curtail real economic activity in favor of protecting assets and income streams. Huge declines have come to the economy in these circumstances. The most brutal example was the Great Depression itself. When the top tax rate has been cut and held at reduced levels—as in the 1920s\, the 1960s\, in the long boom of the 1980s and 1990s\, and briefly in the late 2010s— \nastonishing reversals have occurred. The rich have brought their money out of hiding and put it to work in the economy. The huge swings in the American economy since 1913 have had an inverse relationship to income tax rates. \nAbout the Speakers\nArthur B. Laffer is the legendary founder of supply-side economics and economic advisor to President Ronald Reagan and Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher. He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Donald Trump in 2019. \nJeanne Cairns Sinquefield helped pioneer index-fund investing as executive vice president and head of trading at Dimensional Fund Advisors. \nBrian Domitrovic is the author of five books\, including the landmark history of supply-side economics Econoclasts.
